ETHICAL IMPACT

We support the Guatemalan community with purchasing their beautiful handmade textiles for fair prices from the weavers on the local markets. It is very important to us that the they are paid fairly for their hard work. That’s why the artisans themselves set their price. We are giving you - the consumer - the opportunity to show social responsibility by shopping in Ethical Stores like Mayalla. Read more here.

SUSTAINABILITY

We have sustainably sourced all our textiles from our local weavers in Guatemala on the markets in Chichicastenango, Antigua and Panajachel.

EMBRACING CULTURES

We want to show the world the rich Guatemalan culture by sharing its indigenous handcrafted fabrics and traditions with the world. And explaining the meanings of their traditional textiles and other ancient traditions. Many people have never heard of Guatemala, so we see it as our challenge to change that!

    TEXTILE

“Floral Pattern” -Free- motion machine embroidery textile

The textile of this piece is decorated with machine embroidery, it is stitched by a person with a sewing machine on top of colorful cotton in the most lively and vibrant colors. This process is called free-motion machine embroidery. This technique can be very time-consuming. Because its stunning and elaborated designs are made by hand, guiding the textile in the sewing machine without any formal pattern.

Weaver women Guatemala Mayalla huipil making

The artisan has to manually trim and clean up loose or connecting threads after termination of the design and must pause to re-thread the machine manually for each subsequent color. It’s more a manual process rather than an automatized computerized reproduction. Each piece is therefore beautifully unique and cannot be exactly reproduced! This hand embroidery machine textile is characterized by colorful flowers in different shapes and sizes. They are prominent Mayan motifs, traditionally symbolizing the cycle of birth, death and regeneration and stand for the woman’s fecundity and connects her to the spiritual realm. Many communities in Guatemala have increased the use of machine embroidery to depict on huipils figures that previously were woven on the backstrap loom.
